Superman

Kal-El of Krypton aka Clark Kent

Its nearly impossible to live on planet Earth and not know who Superman is. Even if you've never seen a Superman TV show or movie or comic book, you've at least seen pictures and images of him. Even if you don't know his story, ("strange visitor from another planet" and all that), most people at least know he's "faster than a speeding bullet and more powerful than a locomotive". At the absolute very least, you probably have heard the name "Superman" used to describe people (for better or worse), like for example, "He's no Superman" or "He's a regular Superman". Its just part of the language.

Superman premiered in Action Comics in 1938 and has never been not-in-print since then. That's quite a long run for anyone. He's been the subject of so much media; books, TV shows, radio shows, movies and lots and lots of collectible items, too.

As a child, I enjoyed the George Reeves TV show and seeing Superman on the Superfriends Saturday morning cartoon. My brother had a Superman doll by Mego (I had Supergirl), and when I was 8 years old, I got my first Superman comic book. Issue #293, "The Miracle of Thirsty Thursday".

I liked Superman a lot. I loved him even more after the Christopher Reeves movies came out. I had gotten some of the trading cards from the first movie as well as a few other odds and ends like action figures. When my daughter was very young, there was a Superman cartoon on afternoon TV, so we ended up with some collectible toys given to us by friends who got them, (I presume) from one of the fast food restaurants. They are in storage now, but when I can, I will photograph them and post them to this page.

Today, my daughter and I enjoy reading the Superman comics, which include the titles, "Superman", "Supergirl" and "Action Comics", plus special comic issues, too. We both really love Mon-el, Superman's friend from the planet Daxam. We think he's a great character and would love to see him as a doll. Meanwhile, Robert Tonner put out this Superman doll from his D.C. Stars collection and once I saw the doll in person at the Tonner doll store in Kingston, NY, I just had to get him. I have not removed him from the box, but have included photos of him in his box and the doll on the shelf at the store.
